Celebrating 65 years of the Portland and Sapporo Sister City relationship, Vision of Place will welcome the work of both a local Portland photographer as well as Hokkaido-based photographers who have captured stunning visuals to share with the people of Oregon.

The work of twenty-three Hokkaido-based photographers will be featured in Shashin: Photographic Frontiers of Hokkaido in the Pavilion Gallery, depicting a range of scenes and subjects from the Hokkaido region. The photographers are members of The North Finder, an association based in Hokkaido that seeks to share perspectives from this region with the world. In the Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery and the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center, we are thrilled to feature a selection of photography by artist Sandra Chandler. Quiet Reflections of Hokkaido Winter: Photography by Sandra Chandler showcases the essence of the beautiful winter landscape of Japan’s northernmost island. Captured while the artist was traveling in Hokkaido in February of 2023, Chandler’s photography features the iconic scenery of this region with an elegant lens, inspiring reflection and contemplation. Chandler has traveled the world using her designer’s eye to explore minimalist compositions artfully captured from nature.
