Did you know? Kashintei or "flower heart room" is the name of our Tea House. It is used for tea ceremonies held on the third Saturday of every month from April through October. The structure was made in Japan by master craftsmen in the traditional tongue and groove style, using wodden pegs rather than metal nails. On the floor of the tea house are straw mats called tatami. Most tea houses are 4.5 tatami mats in size. The tea house should be fully enclosed with only a small opening for guests to crawl into the room, but our tea house is open on two sides because we use it to demonstrate tea ceremony.

We feel so fortunate to have such humbling and inspiring roots in our Portland community, beginning in the 1960s. During these early years, Portland’s NBC affiliate, KGW-TV, captured Portland Japanese Garden’s construction and has shared the treasured footage from their archives with us.
