This fall, the Garden Gallery at Portland Japanese Garden features the work of one of our own Photographer Members in an inspiring exhibition! A Second Look: Photography by Doug Rundle is on display from August 13 through October 26.
No matter how many times one visits the same place in nature, there are always new, details to discover. Through careful observation and expert composition, Photographer Doug Rundle celebrates the magic of those moments in this exhibition of photographs taken in Portland Japanese Garden. Rundle’s work captures the beauty in the everyday, inviting an appreciation for slowing down and noticing the shape of the world around oneself. While walking the familiar paths and well-trodden trails of Portland Japanese Garden, Rundle finds fresh perspectives in these serene, quiet scenes, inviting all who visit to join him in taking a second look.

“I call this series of images “A Second Look”. Portland Japanese Garden is a visual feast for visitors, and perhaps especially for photographers. I have been photographing the Garden for 9 years and have enjoyed making images of the iconic scenes like the “famous maple” or Heavenly Falls. But the more time I spend, the more I notice and appreciate the exquisite detail in all aspects of the Garden. And that is what these photographs are about: little things that you may not see on your initial visits but then begin to appreciate as time goes by. Maybe it’s something you must crouch down to see, or a tree seen anew in a different season. Or it might be something viewed from a new angle or in a different light – a second look.”

Doug Rundle is a photographer living in Portland, Oregon. His life-long interest in photography was originally inspired by photographers in his family. Rundle’s father was an enthusiastic amateur photographer who introduced him to image making at a young age and taught him how to process film and make prints in their home darkroom. His uncle was a professional photographer and camera shop owner who knew Ansel Adams and Edward Weston and was active with them in the San Francisco Bay Area photography scene of the 1940s and 50s. During Rundle’s career in the medical products industry, his photographic efforts were mainly focused on adventures with his family and friends. Now, over the past many years, Rundle has enjoyed rediscovering his art and has undertaken a more intentional approach to making photographs. He is a past board member and president of the Portland Photographers’ Forum, has won several awards for his images and his photographs have appeared in several on-line publications. Rundle finds inspiration primarily in natural landscapes, both grand and intimate, but his work also includes other subjects that attract his interest.
Portland Japanese Garden is excited to showcase the art of our own community in the Garden Gallery, a hallway gallery space in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center in our Cultural Village. In early 2026, a first time call for submissions was shared with Photographer Members, including Matsu Members (formerly Steward), Sakura Society, and Golden Crane Society, to submit work inspired by the natural world – with a special focus on Japanese gardens, the Pacific Northwest, and Japanese art and cultural traditions. We were honored and moved by the portfolios we received in response.
