Every season provides occasions for inspiration and reflection in nature. This year, we are honored to showcase the art of our own community in a special solo exhibition opportunity in the Garden Gallery, a hallway gallery space in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center.

Members with Photography Member benefits interested in submitting their work for consideration may use this form to send 7–10 high-resolution images, along with:

  • A brief artist statement (3000 characters max)
  • A biographical statement (2000 characters max)

Submissions must be received by 11:59pm on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

The selection team will review all portfolios and will be in touch should your work be selected, including potential exhibition dates and a contract for review. Due to space and timing constraints, exhibition opportunities cannot be offered to all applicants. If your work is not selected or if you miss this submission window, additional calls for submission will be offered in the future.

    • (Separate opportunities for staff engagement will be offered)

Artificial Intelligence Policy

Portland Japanese Garden is a human-centric organization dedicated to the mission of Inspiring Harmony and Peace. Just as we would not replace living moss with artificial turf, we will not replace authentic human voices or artistry with artificially generated material. All submitted photography must be original work and the property of the artist. We will not accept works created by generative artificial intelligence. If exhibited photography is discovered to have been generated through artificial intelligence, its deinstallation costs will be covered by the individual who submitted them.

Exhibition Terms

  • Artists are responsible for the costs and coordination of printing and framing of artwork. Artwork may be delivered or shipped to Portland Japanese Garden. Portland Japanese Garden will repack and ship or deliver any unsold work to the artist, and would be reimbursed for any shipping costs by the artist.
  • All art will be offered for sale. Portland Japanese Garden offers 60% of sales proceeds to the artist with 40% of proceeds benefiting the Garden.
  • In addition to framed work, we are able to offer the sale of editions if this is of interest to the artist. The cost of printing editions is the responsibility of the artist. All editions must be delivered to the Garden along with the framed work 2 weeks ahead of the exhibition opening.
  • The quantity of works that can be displayed will vary based on each exhibition, but in general, 5-9 framed at a maximum of 24” x 36” dimensions may be expected to be displayed.
  • Artwork must be framed, ready to hang, and delivered to our staff 2 weeks before the agreed upon installation date.
  • All artwork will be installed using security T-head screws. Artists will coordinate with Garden staff to ensure that frames are compatible with the security hardware.
  • From the arrival of the work to Portland Japanese Garden premises to the departure of the work, art will be covered by the Garden’s insurance policy.
  • Portland Japanese Garden will cover the installation, signage, and promotion of the exhibition.
  • Portland Japanese Garden will process all art sales.
  • A small artist talk or presentation will be considered in connection with the exhibition, but should not be expected.
