The shakuhachi bamboo flute is among the most recognizable of Japan’s traditional instruments. Join local musician Alex Cooley at the Japanese Garden Cultural Corner for a playful exploration of this uniquely expressive flute. Interspersed with descriptions of the shakuhachi, its notation, and recent history you will hear demonstrations of traditional Honkyoku music, lively Minyo folk tunes, and the contemporary compositions of Fukuda Rando. Please bring your curiosity with you – questions from the audience are very welcome!
