Cultural Festival: Hana Matsuri

Ladling sweet tea over the statue of Buddha symbolizes gentle rain that bathed the baby Buddha in sweet holy water.

Hana Matsuri, The Flower Festival, which occurs on April 8th, is a day to celebrate the birth of Buddha.

On this day of celebration, small temple pavilions called hanamido are decorated with seasonal flowers. The custom of ladling sweet tea over the statue of Buddha represents the gentle rain that fell in Lumbini Grove and bathed the baby Buddha in sweet holy water.

Here at the Garden you will see a hanamido decorated with seasonal flowers. Members of the Henjoji Temple and Priest Kosho will mark this occasion of Buddha’s birth with chanting and the lighting of incense.

This event will take place in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center in our Cultural Village from April 6th – April 7th.
