Stephen will demonstrate the making of utilitarian items for use in the kitchen and at the table. He will make and trim several Yunomi (traditional Japanese drinking cups without a handle), rice and soup bowls, and some bottle forms. He will also demonstrate the use of decorative slip on the inside and outside of the pieces
Artist Bio
Stephen has a Master of Fine Arts from Notre Dame University and has worked as a full time studio potter and workshop presenter since 2012.
In 2017, he rebuilt the Soulgama Anagama, changing the configuration to a hybrid Bourry Box style that requires fewer people to fire and yields a slightly different outcome. A small community of artisans gathers for each firing to share the space.
He has presented workshops in Israel at Tel Hai University, in Hawaii at Donkey Mill Art Center, and LaMeridiana Ceramic Center in Tuscany, Italy. In 2009 and 2018 he presented work in Sapporo with Members of Oregon Potters Association, and in 2019 he hosted potters from Sapporo to an American Barbecue Chicken Lunch at his studio.
For nearly 20 years, he was the Ceramic Chair and a full-time instructor Mt. Hood Community College.
