A version of this message in Japanese is below.

Portland Japanese Garden and Japan Institute are profoundly saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by the devastating earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan on New Year’s Day. We send our most heartfelt condolences to the many individuals and families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. We also send our deepest sympathy to our Japanese community here in Portland and across the United States who are grappling with this tragedy so far from home.

Understanding this is still early days of recovery with the full scope of damage not yet known, we sincerely hope for solace for all who have been affected by the disaster, especially survivors and first responders, while wishing for a quick restoration of normal conditions across the impacted regions.
