In September, the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced that Portland Japanese Garden Chief Curator and International Japanese Garden Training Center Director Sadafumi (Sada) Uchiyama will be among those honored in their ASLA Oregon Recognition Awards program. This program “celebrates the spirit of the landscape architecture profession in Oregon by recognizing people and organizations for their outstanding service to the profession, design excellence, community leadership, and careful stewardship.”
ASLA Oregon hailed Uchiyama, noting he is “an internationally recognized master artisan of the practice of landscape architecture” whose “extreme attention to detail has produced masterworks which both delight and inspire those who visit his garden spaces.” In 2020, Uchiyama was among those given the Award of Excellence in the category of “General Design” by ASLA’s national organization. This was for their efforts in Portland Japanese Garden’s 2017 Cultural Crossing expansion.

This is the second award for Uchiyama within two months—in August of 2022, he was bestowed the Foreign Minister’s Commendation from the Foreign Ministry of Japan, one of the highest honors given by the Japanese government. Recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation are those with outstanding achievements in international fields, who have contributed to fostering friendship between Japan and other countries.
