Hugo Torii was recently named Garden Curator at Portland Japanese Garden, making him the 10th to take on this critical role since the Garden opened in 1967. Torii is succeeding the Chief Curator, Sadafumi Uchiyama.
“Creating gardens takes a lot of time and we see things in a longer timeframe. It’s important that we keep on learning because this vision can evolve and change due to the demands of the time.”
Hugo Torii, Garden Curator
Torii will oversee a team of gardeners and horticultural volunteers as they keep Portland Japanese Garden true to its original intent and design, while also allowing it to grow and evolve.
