This summer, the Garden had the privilege of hosting a very special interview between Dr. Randy Blazak and George Nakata. Mr. Nakata was a 9-year-old boy in Portland, Oregon in 1942 when FDR signed Executive Order 9066, ordering the rounding up of 120,000 west coast Japanese immigrants and citizens. They were placed in camps for the duration of World War 2. Mr. Nakata sat down in the Natural Garden with Dr. Blazak to discuss his experience at that time. The interview is a profound reminder of the importance of cultural understanding.
And what can happen when it doesn’t exist.
