Experience one of Japan’s most beloved summer traditions from July 4–12 with a week of family-friendly activities, wishes hung on bamboo, and storytelling — all culminating in our annual celebration of Tanabata, the Star Festival, on July 12. Visitors of all ages are invited to discover the story behind this centuries-old celebration and join in the festivities in the vibrancy of the Garden’s summer landscape.

Tanabata, or the Star Festival, celebrates the annual meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair), two lovers separated by the Milky Way who are reunited just once each year. Guests are invited to write wishes on colorful tanzaku paper and hang them from bamboo branches throughout the Garden as part of this centuries-old Japanese tradition.

Everything during Tanabata Week is included with Garden admission or membership. We recommend purchasing admission in advance, particularly for Sunday, July 12, when attendance is expected to be highest.
