This fall, Portland Japanese Garden is pleased to host its first-ever Shichi-Go-San for families with children ages 3, 5, and 7.

Shichi-Go-San, meaning “Seven-Five-Three,” is a beloved Japanese tradition celebrating children’s growth and well-being. Rooted in customs dating back more than a thousand years, families gather across generations to dress children in formal kimono, take commemorative photographs, and visit shrines or temples to pray for their continued health and happiness. Shichi-Go-San is traditionally observed on November 15 but is celebrated throughout November in Japan.

In this exclusive Portland Japanese Garden experience, children will be dressed in formal kimono and photographed by a professional photographer in the Tea Garden—a rare setting not ordinarily accessible to visitors. Families are invited to explore the Garden at their own pace, enjoy the beauty of the autumn season, and relax over tea at the Umami Café while celebrating this cherished family milestone together.

This event is limited to five families.

• To accommodate family size, kimono requirements, and photography logistics, exact session times will be assigned after registration.
• Registration will be first come first served. The registration will be completed once the payment has been received.
• A 90-minute multiple-child session is available for an additional $300 per Shichi-Go-San-aged child who will be dressed in kimono. The number of professionally retouched images remains five.
• The photography session also includes family portraits with parents/guardians and siblings who are not of Shichi-Go-San age.
• After completing registration, families will be invited to select their preferred kimono from two available options prior to the event.
