This fall, Portland Japanese Garden is pleased to host its first-ever Shichi-Go-San for families with children ages 3, 5, and 7.

Shichi-Go-San, meaning “Seven-Five-Three,” is a beloved Japanese tradition celebrating children’s growth and well-being. Rooted in customs dating back more than a thousand years, families gather across generations to dress children in formal kimono, take commemorative photographs, and visit shrines or temples to pray for their continued health and happiness. Shichi-Go-San is traditionally observed on November 15 but is celebrated throughout November in Japan.

In this exclusive Portland Japanese Garden experience, children will be dressed in formal kimono and photographed by a professional photographer in the Tea Garden—a rare setting not ordinarily accessible to visitors. Families are invited to explore the Garden at their own pace, enjoy the beauty of the autumn season, and relax over tea at the Umami Café while celebrating this cherished family milestone together.

This event is limited to five families.

Introductory Pricing for 2026

  • Child Age 3 (Girls and Boys): $700
  • Child Age 5 (Boys) or 7 (Girls): $750
  • Each Additional Child receiving Shichi-Go-San Kimono dressing and photography : $300
  • Bring your own kimono and receive a $50 discount on the applicable registration fee.

What is included

  • Garden admission for the family (children and up to two parents or guardians)
  • Reserved parking in a designated area
  • Exclusive access to the Tea Garden and Tea House, areas not normally open to the general public
  • A 60-minute kimono dressing and photography session, including professional kimono dressing by Tradition by Takako and a 30-minute private photo session with a professional photographer (Yoshiko Wong)
  • Kimono rental offered by Tradition by Takako
  • Tea vouchers to be used at Umami Cafe (children and up to two parents or guardians)
  • Five client-selected images delivered as professionally retouched high-resolution digital files
  • All remaining images provided with professional color correction and basic retouching
  • Full access to your private online gallery for viewing and downloading all session images

More Details

Yoshiko Wong Photography
  • To accommodate family size, kimono requirements, and photography logistics, exact session times will be assigned after registration.
  • Registration will be first come first served. The registration will be completed once the payment has been received.
  • A 90-minute multiple-child session is available for an additional $300 per Shichi-Go-San-aged child who will be dressed in kimono. The number of professionally retouched images remains five.
  • The photography session also includes family portraits with parents/guardians and siblings who are not of Shichi-Go-San age.
  • After completing registration, families will be invited to select their preferred kimono from two available options prior to the event.

This event will take place rain or shine.

How to Register

  • To register, fill out the registration form.
  • We will be in touch via email with payment instructions in the order in which form submissions are received. Payment must be completed within one week to secure your spot.
  • Form submissions made before 7am on September 23 will not be considered.
  • Registration deadline is Thursday, October 15, or until all spots are filled. Families will be notified of their scheduled start time by Tuesday, October 20.

The Origins of Shichi-Go-San

Shichi-Go-San originated more than a thousand years ago in the Imperial court of Japan’s Heian period (794–1185). These ceremonies marked important stages in a child’s development and celebrated their continued health and well-being.

Over the centuries, the tradition spread throughout Japan and evolved into the beloved family celebration.

お子様に着物をお召しいただき、通常は一般公開されていない茶庭にてフォトグラファーによる撮影を行います。撮影前後には、ご家族で庭園内を自由に散策しながら秋の風景をご堪能いただき、Umami Caféでお茶をお楽しみいただけます。ご家族の大切な節目を、美しい庭園の中でゆったりとお祝いください。五家族限定となります。

  • $700 （三歳の女児・男児）
  • $750 （五歳の男児、七歳の女児）
  • $300（七五三着物撮影をご希望の兄弟姉妹の追加）
  • ※ ご自身の着物を持ち込まれる場合は、料金から$50が引かれます。

ご案内

  • お子様の人数、着物の内容、撮影スケジュールなどを考慮し、撮影開始時間はお申し込み締切後に決定いたします。
  • お申し込みは先着順です。お支払い完了をもって受付完了となります。
  • 七五三の着物を着られる兄弟姉妹での撮影（全体で90分）は、お子様1名追加につき $300 にて承ります。レタッチ画像は5枚のままとなります。
  • 撮影には、ご家族（ご両親や七五三の年齢ではない兄弟姉妹）のポートレート撮影も含まれます。
  • お申込み完了後、事前に二種類の着物の中からお選びいただきます。

  • 専用お申込みフォームよりお申込みください。
  • フォームを受信した順に、メールにてお支払い方法をご案内いたします。参加枠確保のため、メール受信後1週間以内のお支払いをお願いいたします。
  • 9月23日午前7時より前に送信されたフォームは受付対象外となります。
  • 申込締切は10月15日（木）です。ただし、定員に達し次第、受付を終了します。各ご家族の撮影開始時間は、10月20日（火）頃お知らせします。
