Event Information

As part of our Bonsai Society of Portland Exhibition, join Portland Japanese Garden for a special bonsai pot demonstration by potter Nao Tokutake at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center.

Bonsai, literal translation tree-in-a-tray, is the art and science of miniature trees.

Portland Japanese Garden usually focuses on the tree, not the container, when we showcase bonsai. However, a tree or shrub doesn’t become a bonsai until it is combined with the right container in which to live and grow.

Tokutate’s demonstration will focus on the creation of the tray, or pots, used in bonsai. At last year’s Bonsai Society of Portland Show, guests watched Nao create  a pot over the course of three hours.
