Textile Workshop Series with Judilee Fitzhugh

Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with textile artisan Judilee Fitzhugh to offer a series of four immersive textile workshops. In each session, participants will relax and enjoy the rhythmic dance of needle and thread while learning the meditative art of hand-stitching to create Japanese- and garden-inspired projects.

Each workshop runs from 9:30am–4:00pm, including six hours of instruction and a 30-minute lunch break. Participation is limited to 20 students per workshop, and classes are open to students of all levels of sewing experience.

Individual workshop dates:

  • Wednesday, March 4: Year of the Horse Drawstring Bag
  • Wednesday, April 1: Portland Japanese Garden Tote with Sashiko Peace Lantern
  • Wednesday, May 6: Japanese Teacup Cozy/Carrier
  • Wednesday, June 3: Portland Japanese Garden–Inspired Stitched Vignette

Make up day if necessary

  • Wednesday, May 15: Used only if a class is cancelled due to inclement weather

Workshop Series

Register for all 4 workshops for one single discounted rate:
Members: $500
Public: $625

Approximately 10% savings when registering for the full series.

Individual Workshops

Register for the individual workshops of your choice:
Members: $140 each
Public: $170 each

All tools and materials are included in the workshop fee. Coffee, tea, water, and light snacks will be provided. Students should bring their own lunch and may bring a small personal sewing kit if desired.

Instructor Bio

Judilee Fitzhugh is a textile artisan specializing in natural plant dyes and couture sewing. A tour of duty in Japan with the U.S. Navy sparked a lifelong affection for Japanese aesthetics, indigo, and plant fibers.

She earned her Certificate in Craft from the Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2002 and taught in the BFA and Studio School programs until the school’s closure in 2019. Her work combines natural materials, vintage fabric
