DESCRIPTION:\nMoonrise over Portland city skyline\, accompanied by Mt. Hood.\n\n\n\nExperience one of our most coveted cultural evenings. Stroll through lantern-lit paths\, gather with tea in hand to await the moonrise\, compose haiku\, and savor a bento-style dinner provided by Obon Shokudo as the sounds of traditional Japanese instruments drift through the air.\n\n\n\nMoonviewing 2025 event dates:\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, October 5\, 2025: 5:00-7:30 pm (Moonrise @ 6:02 pm)\n\n\n\nMonday\, October 6\, 2025: 5:30-8:00 pm (Harvest moon - Moonrise @ 6:22 pm)\n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 7\, 2025: 5:30-8:00 pm (Moonrise @ 6:44 pm)\n\n\n\n\nMoonviewing\, or O-Tsukimi in Japanese\, is the practice of gazing at the full moon and enjoying its sacred beauty. Since 1990\, Portland Japanese Garden has scheduled this beloved annual event to coincide with the harvest moon\, which occurs anytime from September to early October. There is no better place in Portland to share the romance and mystery of this special custom than from the eastern overlook of the Portland Japanese Garden Pavilion with its views of the city skyline and Mount Hood.\n\n\n\nYumi Tomimaru performing shamisen at a past Moonviewing. Photo by Jonathan Ley\n\n\n\nMoonviewing Experience Highlights\n\n\n\nMoonviewing guests\, can:\n\n\n\n\nStart the evening with a light vegetarian meal catered by Obon Shokudo\, accompanied by a koto or shamisen performance in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard. Joto Sake and Japanese lager by Pfriem Family Brewers will also be served.\n\n\n\nStroll the lantern-lit garden. Along with O-Bon (The Spirit Festival)\, this is one of only two events each year in which our stone lanterns are illuminated.\n\n\n\nMove to the Mount Hood Overlook and anticipate the moonrise with a cup of Jasmine Pearl Tea and an opportunity to compose haiku as shakuhachi (bamboo flute) music wafts through the air.\n\n\n\nView a candle-lit tea ceremony in Kashintei Tea House.\n\n\n\nAppreciate a special display of ikebana accompanied by tsukimi dango. The 15 white rice cakes\, symbolize the 15th day of the month of the 8th lunar month\, when Moonviewing was traditionally celebrated in Japan. Nana Bellerud’s Ikebana will feature plumes of miscanthus (susuki in Japanese)\, representing the bounty of rice plants\, which the plant resembles.\n\n\n\nAdmire the raked gravel in the Flat Garden is designed in a&nbsp\;special\,&nbsp\;once-a-year checkerboard raking pattern called ichimatsu &nbsp\;in Japanese\;&nbsp\;the alternating squares of white river gravel cast shadows in the moonlight.\n\n\n\n\nVideo of the Flat Garden raked for Moonviewing\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY7GofUhcsE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Event Notes\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that there are three separate evenings available for Moonviewing this year: \n\nSunday\, October 5\n\n\n\nMonday\, October 6\n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 7\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place rain or shine.\n\n\n\nPhotographers are asked not to bring tripods or use flash photography.\n\n\n\nTickets benefit Portland Japanese Garden’s cultural programming.\n\n\n\nChildren under 5 can attend at no additional cost and do not require a ticket\, though they will not receive food or beverages. Children ages 6 and older require a full-price ticket\, which does include a meal and non-alcoholic beverages.\n\n\n\n\nAbout O-Tsukimi\n\n\n\nO-Tsukimi (literally\, “looking at the moon”) is the practice of gazing at the harvest moon\, the full moon in mid-autumn\, and enjoying its beauty. In Japan\, the custom of holding these celebrations is thought to have been started by aristocrats in the Heian period that lasted from the 8th to 12th centuries.
