Japanese Bookbinding Workshop

Learn how to hand-stitch one to two blank books using classic Japanese bookbinding techniques.  In this workshop, you will learn to sew your own instruction manual using a single thread then make a second book using one of these variations: reinforced corners, the tortoise shell, and the hemp leaf patterns. You will be able to personalize your books with decorative washi tapes and different styles of pockets as well as learn about paper qualities and the importance of grain.

Students can purchase a bookbinding tool kit in the Garden Gift Shop after 9:50am on Saturday, October 7th or borrow tools from the teachers.  Students are encouraged to bring, if convenient, small scissors, a snap-blade craft knife, cutting mat, metal ruler, pencil and eraser.  These tools will also be available for students to share.  Students can buy a light lunch in the Garden’s Umami Café or bring a sack lunch.
