Join Portland Japanese Garden’s inaugural, virtual opening reception for the latest exhibition, The Gates of Hope: Connecting Cultures. This is a documentary-style exhibition commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the devastating nuclear disaster that followed in its wake.

Virtual Exhibition Tour: Portland Japanese Garden CEO, Steve Bloom joins Miki Ebara, Chief International Correspondent and Executive Producer of NHK World Japan for an interactive virtual tour of Gates of Hope: Connecting Cultures. Join us for this unique opportunity to gain special insight into the Garden’s newest exhibition.

- Q&A with Sada and Dorie – In May of 2014, Chief Curator Sadafumi (Sada) Uchiyama and Dorie Vollum, former Board of Trustees President traveled throughout Northeast Japan which had been devastated by the 2011 Earthquake & Tsunami searching for clues about the origin of two lost torii gate pieces that had washed up on the Oregon coast one year earlier. Join Sada and Dorie as they recount memories and answer questions about their remarkable trip which ultimately led to the return of the lost kasagi gates.
- Cocktails with the CEO – Join Portland Japanese Garden CEO, Steve Bloom, and a very special guest, Miki Ebara*, Executive Producer and Chief International Correspondent at NHK World Japan, for virtual socializing filled with fun, energy, and casual conversation. Cocktails encouraged, but not mandatory!
- “Step Out” in the Garden – A rare opportunity to hear from Garden Curator, Hugo Torii, who will take you on a special, interactive tour of his current favorite spot in the Garden. Joined by Director of Development, Edwina Kane.

*Miki Ebara was one of the first female foreign correspondents at NHK, and has built her career living in London, Bangkok and New York. Ebara has traveled the globe to cover world’s conflicts, natural disaster-hit areas and international diplomacy at the UN, bringing human-interest stories to the viewers. She is now based in Tokyo as Executive Producer and Chief International Correspondent at NHK World.
