Brown.\n\nLeslie Buck is coming to the Portland Japanese Garden to give a presentation in support of her memoir Cutting Back: My Apprenticeship in the Gardens of Kyoto\, published by Timber Press earlier this year. Buck was the first American woman to learn pruning from one of the most storied landscaping companies in Kyoto. Cutting Back recounts Buck’s bold journey and the revelations she has along the way.\n\nHer presentation will include images from the scenes described in the book and also design elements\, pruning methods and interesting traditional tools from her time in Japan\, cool tools\, and more. Audience members will come away not just with colorful stories and depictions of Japan that they’d never have even gotten to see as a tourist from locales incuding private homes\, a geisha’s garden and monasteries -- but also with new ideas they can apply to their own gardens.\n\nThe lecture is a presentation of the Portland Japanese Garden’s Japanese Garden Training Center\, and it is supported by a grant from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.
