SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Wagakki Collaboration featuring Tsugaru Shamisen\, Shinobue\, and Taiko
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nYumi Torimaru performing shamisen at moonviewing\, 2023. Photo by Jonathan Ley\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a musical performance featuring waggaki\, traditional Japanese musical instruments. The performance by Yumi Torimaru with special guests Kyle Abbott and Joel Mankey will feature tsugaru shamisen (Japanese lute)\, shinobue (bamboo flute)\, and taiko (drum). Together they will play a variety of minyo (Japanese folk songs)\, original compositions\, and some duets of tsugaru shamisen\, the modern\, energetic style of shamisen.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerforming Artists:\n\n\n\nKyle Abbott performing shamisen\, photo courtesy of Kyle Abbott.\n\n\n\nWith over 20 years of experience\, Kyle Abbott performs\, repairs\, and teaches shamisen worldwide\, and has founded Bachido\, the first international shamisen community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoel Mankey performing shinobue\, photo courtesy of Joel Mankey.\n\n\n\nJoel Reed Mankey is a multi-instrumentalist and music producer who has spent 15 years studying and playing Taiko and Shinobue.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Nina Johnson\n\n\n\nYumi Torimaru lives in Portland and studies/ teaches traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue\, and Tsugaru Shamisen.
