Ann McClellan – Bonsai: Tiny Trees, Big Stories

Join Ann McClellan for a compelling introduction to the inspiring world of bonsai and the intriguing cultural history of the art form. Focusing on the renowned bonsai and penjing collections of the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., she will share fascinating tales of the miniature trees and landscapes, highlighting their famous creators and their invaluable roles in international diplomacy and as instruments of presidential influence. From the art form’s beginnings in Chinese antiquity to the dynamic forms shaped by modern masters from across the globe, these small trees allow our imaginations to experience and connect with nature in new ways.

Author Ann McClellan’s newest book is Bonsai and Penjing, Ambassadors of Peace & Beauty, (Tuttle) about the national collections of small trees or landscapes in pots. It joins her earlier two books about the cherry blossom trees in Washington, D.C., reflecting her ongoing interests in Asian art and nature’s beauty.  Her earlier professional career included executive positions at the Smithsonian Institution and World Wildlife Fund among other prestigious national organizations. She treasures bonsai and penjing as profound expressions of the best that people can create in collaboration with nature.
