ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Discover fresh new interpretations of an ancient art form at “Japan’s Gift to the World: Japanese Gardens as Global Phenomenon.”

We’re celebrating the more than 1,500 years of history of the Japanese garden with an international conference here in Portland, Oregon. Be a part of the conversation with garden leaders, authors, researchers, designers, practitioners, and government representatives from Japan, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Canada, France, the U.S., the U.K., Spain, and Russia about:

  • The contemporary and international meanings of Japanese gardens
  • Approaches for cultural and technical education for gardens outside Japan
  • Adaptation, restoration, and preservation approaches that keep gardens sustainable and vital
  • Japanese gardens in the context of ecologically-sensitive design

The conference is organized by the North American Japanese Garden Association and hosted by the Portland Japanese Garden. Co-presenters are the Garden Society of Japan, the Japanese Garden Society of the U.K., and the Japanese Garden Society of Denmark.
