Portland Japanese Garden – a nonprofit cultural organization located in Portland’s Washington Park for more than 50 years – is introducing an access membership to welcome more members in 2020.
In keeping with the organization’s mission to bring the ideals of Portland Japanese Garden to the world: art of craft, connection to nature, and experience of peace – the Garden chose to name its newest membership level “Moon Bridge,” because of what the bridge represents both practically and symbolically to the Portland community and beyond.
“Moon Bridge” Memberships are now available to Oregon and Southwest Washington families receiving public income-related assistance.
This includes but is not limited to: Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC); Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP); Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF); Housing assistance (e.g. Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher, Low Income Energy Assistance); Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) and/or Medicaid.
In the late 1960’s Portland Japanese Garden first erected the Moon Bridge as a gateway to some of the best views in Portland. Like all Japanese bridges, the Moon Bridge is meant to be lingered upon. Visitors cross it and feel a natural invitation to enjoy the artistry and tranquility around them. The Moon Bridge was one of the first structures erected in 1967, only a few years after Portland Japanese Garden itself was established – and has remained a constant symbol of the Garden and its beauty in Portland ever since.
“Our Moon Bridge symbolizes connectedness; a passageway to peace. We hope this addition to our existing access programs helps ensure that everyone in our community has the opportunity to experience the harmony that comes with being on the Moon Bridge and in the Garden itself,” said Megan Adams, Director of Membership at Portland Japanese Garden.

A photo ID and proof of eligibility such as:
- SNAP Card
- WIC Card
- Up to date/current year eligibility letter from DHS or letter of enrollment
- Coverage notification letters

How much does the Moon Bridge Membership Cost?
- $20/year
How long is it valid? How do I renew?
- Memberships are valid for one-year, from the date they are purchased.
- Guests will be notified when their memberships are due for renewal.
What exchanges and benefits are included?
- Due to the eligibility requirements, only Arts for All tickets may be exchanged toward this level of membership (not general admission tickets).
- All the standard benefits of membership are included.
